SETA Possible Pathways: Tools for Racial Equity in Education

SETA Possible Pathways is a proposal that offers tools for diagnosis, planning, training, and monitoring, contributing to the transformation of school culture and educational management, while strengthening structural actions to confront racism and promote racial and gender equity in public education. Developed collectively by the Projeto SETA, in collaboration with a coalition of civil society organizations with extensive experience in Black, Indigenous, and Quilombola movements, the publication brings together knowledge, practices, and strategies aimed at institutionalizing antiracist education as a public policy within education systems. Reparative Futures for International and Comparative Education?

This article is based on the BAICE Presidential Lecture delivered at the 2025 UKFIET conference, which was on the theme of ‘Mobilising knowledge, partnerships, and innovations for sustainable development through education and training’. It argues that anti-racist and reparative perspectives are vital for remaking the field of international and comparative education and that this remaking is urgently needed to counter the rise of ethnonationalism and genocidal violence.

Break the Silence: A call for anti-racism in education

ActionAid International, the Global Campaign for Education, the Global Student Forum, Clade, among other organizations, have produced a letter, in partnership with the SETA Project (System of Education for an Antiracist Transformation), addressed to UNESCO, the High Level Steering Committee of SDG 4 and stakeholders of the Global Education Meeting, which will be held on October 31 and November 1 in Fortaleza (CE), with the aim of presenting a call for antiracism in education

Perceptions over Racism in Brazil

Updated analysis of the data in the executive summary of the survey launched in 2023, an initiative of the SETA Project with Peregum – Black Reference Institute with IPEC – Intelligence in Research and Strategic Consulting with the aim of understanding how the Brazilian population perceives racism, as well as favoring the creation of campaigns and policies for its confrontation.

Improvement and implementation of public education policies that guarantee quality, equity and contextualized provision, through influence and/or support for policy makers and educational authorities at all levels, thus ensuring the implementation of anti-racist and sensitive public educational policies to gender. These policies must consider the axes of strengthening the legal frameworks of anti-racist education, training programs for education professionals, production of teaching and para-teaching material, democratic management and social participation, monitoring and evaluation of equity indicators and institutional conditions with financial investments , human and material.

Intergenerational dialogue about racism, gender and education is developed in homes, schools, workplaces and in the media through national dialogue and advocacy on issues in education and society. Thus, intolerance to racism, gender-based violence, inequalities and rights violations will be built and the defense of the promotion of social, racial and gender justice in Brazilian society will be built.

Black, quilombola and indigenous children, young people and students involved in transforming communities and school culture, so that they are anti-racist and equitable, ensuring the recognition of their knowledge and protagonism as essential elements to achieve the expected changes.
